The Worst Pun In The World

I feel like I’ve lanced a boil with this one. I thought of this joke a while back, but I tucked it away in my ideas folder, never thinking that I’d actually unleash such a pun on the world. However, every week when I came to drawing my next cartoon, it would squat there, glowering, daring me to finally reveal my shameful love of a good groan-inducing pun. So here it is. I’ve cleansed myself and promise not to do puns anymore. Well, not for a year at least… hmm, probably more like 6 months…. okay, okay, I solemnly swear not to include any puns in the next 10 cartoons.

So the thing is, I’ve posted the worst pun I can think of, can you do any better (or worse)? Yes, it’s COMPETITION TIME. Leave your worst puns in the comments section (don’t forgot to include your email) and the person who comes up with the worst one (as decided by me) gets a print of any cartoon from the archives. Closing date is Sept 28th. Happy punning.

Finally, if punning’s not your thing and you want some quality webcomic action, you should check out Nedroid – the Party Cat one is especially good.

    Get thee too a a punnery!
    Yo ho ho and a bottle of pun.
    You’re the pun that I want.
    Pun Forest, pun!

  2. itemforty

    What does that even mean?

  3. Busalonium

    Yeah, I don’t get it. (But have enjoyed your work up until now)

  4. Sen

    Don’t get it, hee.

    I fear there may be a cultural disconnect with this one – as I too don’t get it.

    Anyway, my favorite worst pun is the saying “That’s punny” in response to a pun. The irony, of course, being that it is not actually a pun, especially if the original pun could not actually be described as funny.

    I love the pointy shows!

    Hmmmm, I goofed. It seems that “It’s health and safety gone mad’ isn’t a common phrase in the U.S. (where about 90% of my traffic comes from). I guess I should’ve checked first. Still, the competition still stands, so the person who posts the worst pun gets a free print of any cartoon from the archives.

    Or it could just be that the pun is truely *dreadful*

    You deserve to be PUNished for this comic.

    What dose the Basketball Playa' do when he was sad? He was BALLIN'!

    Pun 1:
    Bilbo was petrified… Old Hobbits die hard.

    Pun 2:
    Q: Why did Colonel Sanders cross the road?
    A: To pick up chicks.

    (Both puns shamelessly authored by Roy Blumenthal.)

    @evan:
    Congrats Evan! I didn’t know anyone could pun worse than me!

    @DJBogTrotter:
    Re selling prints via your site… Hmm… The holy fricking grail! There’s a WordPress free ecommerce plugin that allows you to turn selected pages into active shop pages. So basically, what I’d do in your shoes is…

    1. Get the plugin. (I *think* it’s called WP-ecommerce plugin. It’s from a New Zealand-based company.)

    2. Set up a price for each page that contains a cartoon.

    3. Get yourself some sort of payment account to allow you to receive money. If you’ve got access to PayPal, you’re a winner! (I’m in South Africa, and PayPal doesn’t allow me to receive payments here. Blah.)

    4. Work out a consistent workflow once you receive an order. You need to be able to action it *fast*! *Every time*. The closer you’re able to come to a ‘Standard Operating Procedure’ (SOP), the better poised you’ll be to scale this into a business later on if it proves immeasureably successful.

    Start with the end in mind… What *should* happen if you find that you’re getting ten or fifteen orders a day? How should you be printing? How do you get the pics to the printer? How do you get them back? How do you ship? Do you have a covering letter? Do you have stationery? A publicity pack? Mailmerge personalisation?

    5. You’ve got to be *certain* you’re not being defrauded before you release a print. There are gangs who place a small order, then follow it up with a moderately sized order, and then a third massive order. All three being fraudulent, the first two of which are simply a test to see what sort of defenses your site has.

    Hope this helps!

    Blue skies
    Roy
